Gracing the cover of The Americans, this photograph has reached the status of icon in the history of photography. Initially scorned as anti-American, The Americans is Frank’s collection of 83 photographs that exposed the feelings of anxiety, alienation, and loneliness in this country during the 1950s. This personal, passionate series of photographs exposing racism, prejudice, and bigotry are often underlit or underexposed, raw, and off balance, countering standard depictions of this country as vigorous and wholesome. New Orleans depicts segregation at the same time that it suggests the lack of physical and spiritual connection people have to their cities and town.
