This medal commemorates the centennial of the May Revolution and Argentina’s independence from Spain in 1810. The anniversary celebrations held all over the country maintained a message of progress and prosperity, particularly Argentina’s agricultural wealth, which earned the country the nickname of the “world’s barn.” The centennial celebration led to medals, paintings, and other souvenirs as keepsakes for purchase or gifts to dignitaries. The obverse of this medal depicts the founding members of Argentina’s first independent government, the First Assembly or Primera Junta, while the reverse portrays allegorical personifications of various Argentinian industries.
