While she is known as a painter in oil on canvas, Suzan Frecon likes to work in watercolor while she waits for a layer of oil paint to dry. Her works on paper seem more relaxed and exploratory than her paintings, which, since the 1980s, are often dominated by large expanses of monochrome color. In this watercolor, rust-red lines seem to caress a sheet of light brown ledger paper, as they respond to its tone, geometry, and directionality. They animate the sheet and seem to thrive. Frecon received her education at Penn State University and the Ecole nationale superieur des Beaux-Arts, Paris. She lives and works in New York.
