This medal of Napoleon Bonaparte commemorates his conquest of Naples in 1806. The reverse image evokes the iconic coinage of ancient Neapolis and complements the neoclassical depiction of Napoleon on the obverse. Napoleon took particular interest in medallic depictions of himself, and even had couriers hand deliver designs of medals from the Paris Mint during his many military campaigns to comment on and approve designs in advance.
