This muscular, bearded man is articulated with forceful lines that give the work almost sculptural presence. The emphasis, however, is placed on the upper part of the body and head, culminating in the dramatic contrast of deeply shaded eyes and the raised, upward-pointing hand. The figure seemingly draws its strength from the spiritual realm and can tentatively 
be identified as a prophet. The unknown artist clearly reflected the influence of Michelangelo’s draftsmanship as he created this study, probably in preparation of a decorative project.
