Nicolás de Piérola (1839–1913), nicknamed “The Caliph” by his followers, served as the 33rd (1879–1881) and 39th (1895–1899) President of Peru. A controversial figure then and now, Piérola has been praised by some historians for his sound economic policy and for stabilizing the Peruvian currency, and vilified in accusations of corruption throughout his career. Piérola was an admirer of Napoleon III and stylized his goatee and whiskers after the French King, as seen on this medal, issued in celebration of his sixtieth birthday.
