Michel Dorigny was a close collaborator and son-in-law of Simon Vouet (1590–1649), a leading seventeenth-century French painter who helped introduce the Italian Baroque to Paris. Dorigny popularized Vouet’s composition in over eighty engravings. The younger artist made a name for himself with decorative designs for some of the most prestigious private residences in Paris. None of these interior decorations survives. Dorigny’s many sumptuous drawings of wall designs, such as this sheet, are thus invaluable for the understanding of his contribution to the stylistic development of Parisian interiors at a particularly fruitful moment. It is unclear whether this drawing was destined for a specific commission or was meant for publication in a pattern book.
