To resist the passionate advances of Apollo, the chaste nymph Daphne is being transformed into a laurel tree. Painted in grisaille, a technique of painting entirely in shades of gray, this is an early work by the young Pontormo, and perfectly expressive in its drama and exaggerated theatricality of Mannerism's pleasure in disrupting the balance and stability of High Renaissance painting.
