John Kensett began his artistic career as an engraver but embraced landscape painting while studying and traveling in Europe during the 1840s within a large circle of American artists. A successful painter in oils, he developed his style into one of great simplicity with abstract qualities. As a masterful luminist, he rendered atmospheric effects as pure light and color. By laying down washes, he achieved these effects with a monumentality that belies the small size of this sheet.
