Clement IX commissioned Bernini to design the new apse facade of Santa Maria Maggiore, which is represented here. In 1673 Clement X, abandoning Bernini's project, had a new design executed by Carlo Rainaldi. Bernini's project adds a colonnade encircling the apse; Rainaldi omitted this.
