Pierre Jean David d’Angers spearheaded the revival of the cast medal in France, creating an immense series of approximately 500 uniface bronze portrait medals collectively titled Galerie des Contemporains. D’Angers’s series, as the artist put it, “glorif[ied] great men, noble causes and inspiring accomplishments” of famous contemporary men and women. Celebrated historian Emmanuel, Comte de Las-Cases, most well-known for his book on Napoleon’s exile in St. Helena (Le Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène), is depicted boldly in d’Angers’s characteristically sketch-like, sculptural style.
