Queen Victoria surpassed George III as the longest reigning British monarch in 1896, but delayed celebration of this milestone until the sixtieth anniversary (Diamond Jubilee) of her coronation in 1897—the first ever in British history. Hundreds of thousands of people attended the royal parade on June 22nd, which covered a six-mile stretch in London. Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee commemorative medals included: 73 gold medals to members of the Royal Family; 3,040 silver medals to foreign ambassadors and high-ranking administrators throughout the Empire; and 890 bronze medals, such as this one, to officers of the Army, Navy, and Auxiliary forces who participated in the parade. The event symbolized the influence and expanse of the British Empire, then at the height of its power.
