Guillaume Dupré is one of the most celebrated medalists of all time. Dupré’s talents were recognized early in his career by King Henri IV of France who named him the Controller General of puncheons and effigies for the coinage of France in 1604, and later “first sculptor” to the King in 1611. This medal is one of several designs for Louis XIII (son of Henri IV). Justice holds a sword in one hand and a scale in the other on the reverse—a reference to Louis XIII’s adoption of the title “The Just.”
