During the Early Bronze period, artists from the marble-rich islands of the Cyclades produced distinctive sculptures that favored a stylized portrayal of the human body. Though exhibiting an overall similarity of form, style varied from island to island and point to the strength of local workshops. Females were typically represented nude with arms folded over the body. Though displayed upright, these figures were intended to lie on their back and may have had a funerary purpose.
