George Hawley Hallowell, a Boston artist, captures the rugged wilderness of northern Maine, where lumbering has fueled Maine’s economy since the seventeenth century. Hallowell’s Logging Crew depicts the dangerous spring drives that brought valuable timber resources to market. Crews lived in temporary housing camps along the river, where only the basic necessities were found. The East Branch Penobscot River is a seventy-five-mile long tributary of the Penobscot River, once the scene of skilled lumbermen working in a dangerous industry. Today, the river runs through the heart of the newly-designated Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.
