Trained by a ship-painter and active as a theater-painter at the beginning of his career, Julius Caesar Ibbetson engaged his audience with works that could at times be sentimental—such as the return of a seaman to his family after a long absence—or exotic—as in the depiction of marginalized communities. This painting illustrates the embrace between a dark-skinned sailor, perhaps on his way out to sea, and a woman in the showy dress of a prostitute.
