Goldberg belonged to a group of students of the German-American artist Hans Hofmann and, after serving in the U.S. Army in the North African and Asian theaters of war, made his mark as a member of the rising New York School. By 1955, Goldberg had exhibited with Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline at the pivotal “Ninth Street Show” (1951) and had received a solo exhibition at Tibor de Nagy Gallery (1953). He lived downtown and frequented the legendary Cedar Bar. In this work on paper, Goldberg engages oil paint as a drawing medium. Unmodulated fields of paint roughly fill in the graphic outlines of a composition the artist initially sketched out in black. While he builds up the paint surface to a dense relief in some areas, in others the paper is left bare. Red and blue brushstrokes and collaged blue tape add to the drawing like appearance of this energy-filled work.
