Francesco Laurana

Francesco Laurana

Italian 15th-16th century sculptor
(ca. 1420 - 1502)

From Dalmatia, Laurana is first noted at work on the Triumphal Arch at Naples in 1458. He was in France from about 1460-66 and again from 1477 to his death. From 1466-76 he was in Sicily and Naples. Laurana was primarily a marble sculptor; the medals attributed to him appear to date from his first sojourn in France. See Forrer 3, pp. 339-43; Corpus, pp. 16-18; Kress, p. 11; W. Rolfs, Francesco Laurana, 1907. --- from The Molinari Collection, Andrea S. Norris and Ingrid Weber, Published by Bowdoin College, 1976
