Swiss, son of the engraver Domaine Dassier of Geneva, Jean studied in Paris under Mauger and Roettiers from 1694-96. He returned to Geneva and in 1711 was made assistant engraver at the mint. In 1720 he succeeded his father as mint master, a post which he kept until he died. He visited England in 1728 and Turin in 1743. Dassier engraved several medallic series of which the first, of French celebrities of the time of Louis XIV, begun in 1720, established his reputation. Other series are of French rulers from Pharamund I to Louis XV, of religious reformers, Roman history (done with Jacques Antoine), Genevan theologians, and the sovereigns of England.
