Antonio Abondio

Renaissance Italian sculptor
(Riva del Garda, trento, 1538 - 1591, Vienna)

Abondio was apparently born in Riva in 1538 and died on 3 May 1591, in Vienna. This medalist and wax embosser worked 1565-66 in Innsbruck for Ferdinand II and on 1 June 1566 became Imperial "Konterfetter" in the service of Maximilian II. From 1576 active for Rudolph II, Abondio settled in Prague in 1580. Journeys took him to the Netherlands (1566), Pressburg (1569), Munich and Augsburg (1572), Graz (1575), Italy (1585), and Lyons (1588-89). He was the father of Alessandro Abondio, born about 1570, who was court sculptor of Rudolph II from 1606 to 1612 in Vienna, Prague, and Innsbruck. From 1632 to 1645 he was active in the service of Elector Maximilian I of Bavaria. Alessandro Abondio died in 1648.
