Bierstadt was one of the most important landscape painters of the American West, producing large, romantic canvases of the Rocky Mountains, the Yosemite Valley, and the Native American tribes of the West. He also owned a successful photography business with his brothers, Charles and Edward, that operated in New York City from 1860 to 1866.
