Studied in Rome with Benedetto Lutti and Francesco Trevisani where he stayed from 1713-1718. He went again to Rome, at his own expense from 1721-1728 to try to solve a complicated love relationship problem. His lover was held in a convent, so he resolved the affair by kidnapping her from the convent then returned to Portugal. He was later called by King João V to be his Court Painter.
