Renaissance German painter, printmaker and goldsmith
(Solothurn, ca. 1485 - 1527/1529, Basle)

Urs Graf was a wood-engraver, who at early periods in his life was a goldsmith, painter and engraver on copper. He was born at Solothurn between 1485 and 1490, and after working with a goldsmith at Zurich, he in 1515 took part in the Swiss war in Lombardy, and again in 1522, being taken prisoner in the following year. he died at Basle between 1527 and 1529. he appears to have been a wild and reckless characer, but he managed to execute 327 woodcuts, chiefly book illustrations.
