Maurice Prendergast was among the first American artists to return from study in France with a profound appreciation of Paul Cezanne and Fauvism, a modernist artistic style that emphasized bold colors over a more representational palette. Best known for his depictions of leisure activities in summery seaside resorts, Prendergast—like many of his contemporaries—found inspiration along the New England coastline. However, he distinguished himself from his peers, many of whom had begun their careers as illustrators, by his lack of interest in anecdotal detail. Prendergast’s simplified shapes, bright color palette, and “staccato” brushstrokes lend themselves well to capturing transient moments in nature.
