A Hudson River School painter, McEntee studied with Frederic Edwin Church (1826--1900) and specialized in landscapes. A leading artist in nineteenth-century New York, he eschewed “fine views” for simple scenes in nature. On a sketchbook page, McEntee records in detail a rocky outcropping and the decaying trunk of a fallen tree.
