Andy Warhol, the quintessential pop artist, returned to same motifs over and over through screen-printing. One of his most famous is this grid of four simplified flowers, often rendered in different combinations of bright, flat colors. Warhol’s pointed exploration of the relationship between fine art and popular visual culture constituted a revolutionary gesture, prompting his audience to reconsider the very nature of art. – Just what transforms a cliché, or mundane imagery, into art, and visa versa? To what degree does “art” relate to a work’s aesthetic properties, and to what degree to its conceptual content? Warhol’s successful provocation continues to resonate.
