Object Description

Per Michael Mattis: NB: another print of this image is annotated by Heyman thus: “This woman belongs to a rare tribe in Nigeria. The British have called them the Platypus people. In slaving times when traders stole the best looking women – and brought them to the United States – their local chief put these disks through the lips and ears of only the most attractive women in order to discourage the slave traders. Soon all the women in the village had the discs because they wanted to be the most attractive.”
