Bronze, struck, 42 mm.
The Abbe de I'Epee interested himself in the education of poor deaf and dumb children, and founded in 1755 a school for such pupils, which he supported until his death. The medal was used as a prize awarded by the government in the institutions for the deaf and dumb.
