Napoleon Bonaparte’s 1798 military expedition in Egypt prompted widespread interest throughout Europe in the history and culture of Egypt, then a province of the Ottoman Empire. A half-century later, his fellow countryman Charles-Théodore Frère first visited Egypt and became enamored of the region. Having studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Frère established a studio in Cairo in 1853. Painting scenes of famous buildings—as well as daily life—he won acclaim both in France and in Egypt. In Cairo, local authorities awarded him the title “bey”—or lord—in recognition of his artistic achievements. Street in Cairo epitomizes the interest in Orientalist themes then popular in Europe and America.
