Object Description

320 ALESSANDRO FARNESE (1545-92), Governor of the Netherlands, third Duke of Parma, 1586 1585

Obv. Bust to right, wearing cuirass and ruff with Order of the Golden Fleece. Around, ALEXANDER FARNES : PAR : PLA . DVX . BELG : DVM : GVB . ; on truncation, AET . 40
Rev. Alexander the Great, seated in his tent, reaches out toward a satyr who gestures towards a river. In distance, the town of Antwerp. Around, CONCIPE CERTAS SPES 1585; below, [Greek Inscriptions]
Gilt bronze, 45 mm.

A variant of this medal, with obverse inscribed PRIN instead of DVX (Houston, no. 337), is attributed to Jacob Jonghelinck. In 1585 the Duke of Parma confirmed Jonghelinck's appointment as mint warden at Antwerp (Forrer 3, p. 84) . The reverse compares the siege of Antwerp with the siege of Tyre by Alexander the Great (Houston).
