Sloan painted Island and Wisteria during one of his visits to Gloucester, Massachusetts, a seaport that supported major fishing operations and attracted many summer visitors. In this summertime work, Sloan depicts a rural island with lush green fields. With its small house and outbuildings, the scene, though near to shore, remains a little world of its own.
