Object Description

11 LUDOVICO CARBONE (1435-82), of Ferrara, poet

Obv. Bust to right, laureate. Below, incised, OPVS . SPERANDEI; around, OR SETTV QVEL CARBONE QVELLA FONTE
Rev. A siren above waves holds one of her tails in each hand; rocky foreground with leafless tree at left and right. Around, CHE SPANDI DI PARLAR SI LARGO FIVME | . MVSIS GRATIISQVS VOLENTIBVS .
Bronze, 85 mm. Hole at top

The medal probably dates from 1464, when Carbone received a wreath from Pius II at Bologna, although he was crowned a second time in 1469, by Frederick III. For the obverse inscription, see Dante's Inferno i, 79-80.
