Winslow Homer spent the final years of his life in Prouts Neck, Maine, and created some of his most accomplished and serene works there. In 1884, he moved into his new studio building on the peninsula and enjoyed the jagged, fantastic rock formations and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean that the site still offers today. His accuracy in depicting an area near Cannon Rock testifies to Homer’s intense interest in the particulars of his surroundings and illustrates the seemingly unlimited opportunities Prouts Neck offered thanks to constantly changing weather and tidal conditions. The bold lines of this drawing harken back to his experience as a graphic artist and illustrator. However, the dramatic image of the wave crashing against the rocks is evocative of the powerful images of untamed nature characteristic of Homer’s later works.
