Having traveled to Paris in 1910--where he met his future wife, artist Marguerite Thompson, who, like him, would embrace modernism--Zorach found himself deeply impressed by the work of Henri Matisse (1869--1954) and Pablo Picasso (1881--1973). Describing the implications of his new approach to creating art to students in 1931, he explained: “Modern Art to my generation was a spiritual awak[en]ing, a freeing of Art from the idea of copying Nature. We entered into a whole new world of form and color that opened up before us.”
