In Gunsmith, 6 Centre Market Place, Manhattan, Berenice Abbott paid tribute to the store window photographs of Eugène Atget. This photograph is part of Abbott’s series Changing New York, a project inspired by Atget’s tireless attempts to photograph an Old Paris that was disappearing. Abbott got to know Atget and his work through Man Ray, and later acquired his estate of prints and negatives with the express purpose of promoting his legacy in books and exhibitions.
