“Since 1979 or so, I have been hiring a private Cessna plane so that I can make drawings from the air of Maine industrial sites and their relation to the geography. I try to see the color and shapes of a site directly on a pad with pastels, then finish it later at home in my studio using a minimum of back-up photos. While working on a large oil painting, I made other drawings, some larger or smaller, in order to try out different marking systems on a variety of different colored papers. For “Maine Yankee Nuclear Plant, IV,” I chose a favorite vellum so that the charcoal could slide and blend strokes, and erasures could be used to define lights, such as in the roadways, and the volumes of the reactor and electrical fields. I felt the reactor shape and lights down its backside harkened to Native American braves. The pool in front of the reactor had an unfortunate heart shape. If viewers of this drawing share my anxiety about the usurping of the natural landscape, I will have been successful.”--Yvonne Jacquette
