Henrietta Benson Homer was born in Bucksport, Maine, a thriving town on Penobscot Bay founded by her ancestors. In an age when American families began to value the education of their daughters, she was sent to Boston to study in a female academy. There she skillfully copied English prints into her sketchbook (see adjacent volume). Henrietta drew and painted throughout her life, a love that influenced her son, the artist Winslow Homer. His earliest drawings of rustic buildings and landscapes resemble those found in his mother’s sketches.
