Inspired by a rural Austrian custom of hanging tools on barn walls, Herbert Bayer made fantastical paintings depicting abstracted, non-functional objects, hung in barn-like spaces where clouds float indoors. In Wall with Shingles and other photographs from his Fotoplastiken series, Bayer recreated the effect by arranging and photographing sculptural tableaus, and then manipulating the images through montage and airbrushing techniques. Starting out as a graphic designer for the Bauhaus School in Germany, Bayer went on to have a long and successful career spanning many media and two continents.
