Originally created around 1980, Robert Barry’s Untitled (Had To) “had to” be recreated by the artist in 1992 in the wake of damage to the original work. A close friend of the Vogels, Barry has dedicated his career to the development of conceptual art focused upon ideas. Recent paintings include monochromatic canvases featuring words or phrases. The letters do not conform to the plane of the canvas, encouraging the viewer to explore the edges, or limits, of the work itself, both literally and metaphorically.
