“If you see Herbert and Dorothy in action, they look,” Lucio Pozzi has noted. It seems appropriate then that the artist’s portraits of the collectors seem to emphasize their eyes. His admiration for the Vogels is reflected in an antecdote shared by the artist with the filmmaker Megumi Sasaki, which emphasizes the couple’s modesty and self-effacing manner. Pozzi marveled at his first encounter with the Vogels when a friend pointed them out in a crowd: “You see those two people? You would never guess it, but they are two of the biggest collectors of new art in New York.”
