“I don’t make sculpture,” Louise Nevelson insisted, “and it isn’t black and it isn’t wood or anything, because I wanted something else. I wanted an essence.” Nevelson found her voice as an artist after she discovered that black was not the negation of color, but “total color. It means totality. It means: contains all . . . You can be quiet and it contains the whole thing.” Louise Nevelson emigrated as a young girl with her family from Kiev and grew up in Rockland, Maine, before making her mark in New York.
