Following the destruction of the original castle at Rimini caused by the development of fifteenth century lightweight cannons, Lord of Rimini Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta sought to rebuild the structure, as seen on the reverse. In comparison to other specimens of similar obverse and reverse imagery, this medal incorporates higher concentrations of zinc and lead, which form a high-zinc brass. The lead in this medal caused a natural patina, verdigris, to be quite prominent on the surface. The surface quality of the medal helps confirm the fifteenth-century dating and makes it conceivable that this specimen might have been used as a foundation medal during the construction of the castle in Rimini.
