Object Description

382 CHRIST SURROUNDED BY ANGELS, ca. 1600
Christ, half-length, is depicted in clouds, among which are the heads of eight angels. Over his garment, he wears a cloak clasped in front; he holds his right hand up in blessing and his left rests on an orb.

Bronze, gilt, 88 x 71 mm. Cast from model with rounded top; this specimen extends beyond the design on top and sides.

The similarity between this plaquette and the God Surrounded by Angels, which G. Habich attributes to Jacob Kromer {Schaumuenzen 2, i, p. 449, fig. 464), suggests that the work was created in the same workshop. A variation by another artist was in the Molthein Collection (Molthein, no. 413, pl. 33). There is a lead specimen in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich (with rounded top).

Bibl.: Weber, no. 471.
