Object Description

376 DANCING PEASANT COUPLE
A peasant couple holding hands stepping to the right; the man with a knife in his belt and a feathered cap. Background, left, a tree; continuous wreathed border broken by four bands.

Bronze, gilt, dia. 36 mm. Gilding worn; three holes in edge.

Based on Des Jakres Ende from the series "Das Bauernfest oder die zwolf Monate," engraved by Hans Sebald Beham in 1546 (Bartsch, Adam, Le Peintre Graveur 8, no. 160; Hollstein, F. W. H., German Engravings, Etchings, and Woodcuts, 1400-1700, 3, Amsterdam, n.d., p. 98 ff.). Four further depictions from this series are known. Some compositions from the plaquettes occur on pieces for draughts (see Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, Catalog 14, Georg Himmelheber, Spiele Munich, 1972, nos. 156-58).
Other specimen: (bronze, gilt) Berlin, Staatliche Museen (lost).

Bibl.: Bange, D.M., p. 105, no. 7088, pl. 20; Weber, no. 209, 5.
