Object Description

394 Series: EVENTS FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT

B. JOSEPH BEING PULLED FROM THE WELL AND SOLD (Gen. 37:26-28)
Two of his brothers pull Joseph, seen from behind, out of a well with ropes. Two Midianites and two others stand behind at left. Trees at the sides and in background. Cartouche work at the borders.

Bronze, trapezoidal, 60 x 85 mm. Reworked aftercast.

These works may be castings from plate rims. Besides these two, there exist scenes of Eleazer and Rebecca at the Well (bronze, 59 x 17 mm.; Parpart, no. 724, pl. 15) and Isaac Blessing Jacob (bronze, 60 x 83 mm.; Morgenroth, no. 399, pl. 27). The belief of Middeldorf and Goetz that the Isaac plaquette is "similar to a series from the Old Testament" (see Bange, D.M., p. 114, nos. 5839-44, pl. 23) cannot be accepted.
Another specimen: New York, Coll. Michael Hall, Esq.

Bibl.: Weber, no. 717, 3.
