Object Description

424 THE REPENTANT MAGDALENE
Dressed in a belted robe and cape, a flower garland in her loosened hair, the Magdalene is seen beside a prayer stand. On an open book upon the stand is a skull which she holds with her left hand; in her right hand, a crucifix. Around her, a sort of cloud nimbus with blossoms. Narrow frame.

Copper, repousse or molded, gilt, no x 95 mm. Holes at top right and bottom.

It is unusual to see the Magdalene depicted with a flower garland in her hair and a cloud nimbus (gloriole) with blossoms. This iconography may be related to a local tradition, which, when determined, would assist in the proper attribution to the workshop, which by the quality of its work, must be provincial.
