Object Description

412 Series: THE SAINTS
D. THE REPENTANT MAGDALENE
The saint sits in a landscape with her head bowed toward a crucifix held in both hands. On the right, an ointment jar stands near a tree stump upon which is a skull. A scourge hangs from a nearby bough. In the left background, buildings. Molded border with ring at top.

Bronze, 100 x 70 mm.

This plaquette is known only in bronze examples. It belongs to the series of saints even though the saint is here depicted as a three-quarter seated figure. There is another specimen in the Molinari Collection, perhaps a later cast (Acc. no, 1967.18.3, bronze, 103 x 70 mm.).
Other specimens: Basel, Historisches Museum (gilt); Berlin, Staatliche Museen, Skulpturensammlung; London, British Museum; New York, Coll. Michael Hall, Esq.; New York, Metropolitan Museum; Paris, Musee Cluny (enameled).
