Object Description

390 ADORATION OF THE CHRIST CHILD
The Christ Child, Mary and Joseph before a palace-like building. On the left, a shepherd kneeling and several women, some carrying baskets on their heads. To the left, a woman leading a child; with them a flutist. To the right, an ox and a donkey; in front, a lamb. Above, an angel with a scroll (banderol). Around, narrow border.

Bronze, gilt, chased, dia. 96 mm.

The example in the Molthein Collection, which Braun and Bernhart considered a South German work of the late sixteenth century, is probably a reworked aftercast, as the architecture is not clearly articulated. Without doubt, the composition comes from the sixteenth century, and reveals Italian influence.

Bibl.: Braun, no. 168, pl. 49; Weber, no. 858. Auction catalogs: Molthein, no. 347, pl. 32; Cahn, Frankfurt/M., Catalog 59, 14 March 1928, no. 2292, pl. 39 (bronze, gilt).
