L'Amour Vaincu (Love Vanquished) along with Le Triomphe de L'Amour (The Triumph of Love) [1948.19] were originally part of a series of four that illustrate l’Histoire d’Amour, or the History of Love. The oblong shape of the paintings points to their original placement above the doors of a palatial room, perhaps in the Parisian Hôtel du Maréchal Tallard, built in 1728. Close inspection reveals that they were extended significantly to meet the demands of a new space. French eighteenth-century interior decoration imaginatively paired richly ornamented wood paneling, fireplace mantelpieces, furniture, decorative arts, and paintings in dialogue with each other. These installations often necessitated the adjustments of individual parts to fit the overall design.
