This farmyard scene depicts a woman feeding her chickens beside a sun-dappled thatched roof building. Such quiet rustic scenes were typical of Dutch artist Johannes Garjeanne’s practice and widely popular at the turn of the twentieth century. During a period of rapid industrialization, migration, and social change, many artists and collectors gravitated towards nostalgic views of rural life. Garjeanne was a highly accomplished draughtsman who taught drawing for several decades. In this work, he rarely blends the pastel pigments with a stump, but rather leaves evident the diagonal movement of his hand. The resulting impression is a light-filled scene that captures this fleeting moment.
